Top 3 things to consider when using reborn doll kits

by sam on August 18, 2011

A lot of people who like or collect reborn babys consider making their own at some point. The good news is that, nowadays, it isnt too difficult to set about doing this because the techniques used have been developed in order to make them as effective as possible.

There is of course a steep learning curve. There are some things you can do when you start out to make the process as easy as possible. As an example, one of them is to use a reborn doll kit. This is basically bare doll pieces that are ready to go through the reborning process. You dont have to worry about preparing them, which is a laborious task although one drawback is that you cannot choose some of the finer things, such as eye shapes and approximate age.

Below are the pros and cons of using a reborn doll kit;

Pros:

  • Makes the process easier
  • The doll is usually dismantled already
  • More often than not, they will come with a new cloth body
  • You dont have to remove the factory markings and hair

Cons:

  • They can sometimes be more expensive
  • The kits are not uniform - E.G some will have a cloth body, others won't
  • You dont have much say in the base look of the baby
  • You dont get to practice taking a doll apart

As you can see from the above, neither side outweights the other. If you are looking to improve your creative skills, such as painting, layering and microrooting then you will find that a reborn doll kit will let you get around to doing this quicker than if you had to dismantle it yourself.

Of course, in order to become a better artist you will have to get to grips with the fiddly parts of reborning as well and removing the factory markings when you dismantle a doll is one of the toughest parts. If you are serious about becoming a reborn doll artist then you will want to make sure you are able to reborn a doll from start to finish.

In conclusion, a reborn doll kit is ideal if you are just starting out or if you want to practice a certain part of reborning. They are a quick and easy way to get started on a reborn doll without having to dismantle the doll. Preparing the doll does take quite a while and its not everyones cup of tea. You can always look at doing this once you have mastered the more fun aspects of reborning a doll, such as painting it and ensuring it looks as real as possible.
